Just 5? You're a right fucker, Enge.

Fuck it, here goes:

'Summer Lightning' by P. G. Wodehouse
'1984' by George Orwell
'Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley
'Intimacy' by Hanif Kureishi (Possibly because it helped save my marriage - that's another story).
'Fahrenheit 451' by Ray Bradbury.

It might even be another 5 tomorrow.

Impossible to condense down to 5.

Mervyn Peake - Gormenghast trilogy
Italo Calvino - Cosmicomics, Our Ancestors (trilogy)
Gogol - Dead Souls
Gunther Grass - The Tin Drum
James Branch Cabel - hard to say which. His best-known is "Jurgen". maybe "Chivalry".
Poe - tales of mystery & imagination
Conrad - Heart of Darkness
Hardy - jude the Obscure
Heller - Catch 22
Goncharov - Oblomov

How about most over-rated classics:

Anything by Falkner or D.H. Lawrence
Crime & Punishment
Virginia Woolf - to the lighthouse ( I found this almost unreadable)

Best books written by those not primarily known as writers:

de Sade - Justine
Aubrey Beardsly - under the Hill
Nietzsche-thus spoke Zarathrustra
Clarke -Childhood's End

The Beardsly book is amazing but everyone else would rate it as dilettante-rubbish.

I seek "fancy" writing/ Artificiality - not sparse realistic writing. Same like prog: the thicker & more bombastic the better.
I guess you could call it Baroque-ornamentation in literature. That's wot Im aftah, Huberts.

My books of choice have little straight dialogue. Lotta description and adjectives after adjectives. (tHAT IS WHY i LIKE  GOTHICS & vICTORIAN) .Words not often used:

Clark Ashton Smith
Jack Vance

I hate unreadable books. However, Journey to Ixtlan is not unreadable; though, his later books are unreadable, like for example Fire From Within, which I don't like. Journey to Ixtlan is Castaneda's finest hour; a really great book imo.
I agree about Solaris movie(s). Though, the novel is amazing.

Yep. Got the Ballentynes. Also "Boats of Glen Carrig" on Ballentyne. And of course the Lovecraftian, "House on the Borderland".

Also got a rare Hodgson hardcover - "Out of the Storm" . In all he spent something like 8 years on the sea. It was torture for him. As a sailor he had a  tiny darkroom aboard ship and would take pictures of the sea in storm.

If your into visionary writers of this period , the one comes closest is David Lindsay and his two novels.

Hodgson's books never sold well. He would have went into total obscurity if in the 50s, August Dereleth did not re-publish his works in Arkam House.

In the first world war Hodgson volunteered for front line at Ypres. This was well-accepted as being a suicide run. He died in combat.
