iN THE 20S (AND GOING ON TO THE 30S & 40S) film about the man-beast, the man-ape were  rather common.
A movie,say,  about transplanting a human brain to ape would have been quite shocking to audiences. (Was a point after the war  that horror films were banned in England.)
One important factor for this interest in half-man beastiality was the well-known Scopes trial where Darwin's theories were disputed.

Renault's Secret was a much lesser-known story by non-other than the french novelist who wrote Phantom Of the Opera.

This was a very well-done grade B film where minimal make-up was put to great effect.
