Canadian drama series of 70s/80s/90s

Post by Wallace on Sun Sep 18, 2016 11:15 pm

I bet you that you Brits have 0% exposure/familiarity with Canadian tv series.

Canada is VERY STRANGE (like France adoring Jerry Lewis) when it comes to TV.

Sure, Canada is world-known foremost for the documentaries (less so nowadays), the comedy series and the children's shows.
But when it came to drama series, there is PRECIOUS little that Canada produced - most being utter shit.

Better-known ones, in Canada at least, are DeGrassi High, Beachcombers (went on for 22 frickken years - always the same story: crusty British Columbians looking for salvage wood log and such floating on the coast, fucksake)

But here are two that you brits should try to find:

Wojeck  (yep Wojeck, not Kojak)   '66 verywell done drama about a rough-faced, tough coroner and problems at home

Lexx   Canada made very few Scifis. this is the best.  Top effects, for the time. A curious blend of light, even humorous sections (alla Restaurant at the End of the Universe) and VERY DARK shit.

Canada made very few mysteries, but in the last decade or so, Murdoch Mysteries is worth watching. Turn of century Toronto  police drama

There was a very good, short-lived Toronto  mystery series called Mc....something. I'm racking my brains but cant recall the name - all pooter searches prove futile.

They gotta new one abart  young doctors training in a northern town. Watched it once - not for me.

Ever seen the Canadian comedy series, Corner Gas?  That is as mundane as it can get. Makes me wanna go out and shoot all Canadians.

One can distinguish a  Canadian show from an American (of the same genre) within 5 minutes. And its not the accent or that the US show will not mention hockey or Tim Horton's.
It is something subtle..yet immediate. I know that makes no sense but...its hard to explain. There is somesort of atmosphere/smell that distinguishes Canadian production. I cant put my finger on it.

Comedian Eugene Levy says one of the big factors is lighting - Canadian lighting was always bad. (I never noticed)

When it comes to comedy, I'd say one basic difference is that Canadians are more willing to use humour that makes fun of themselves and not so much others.

Im guessing reason you get so much Canadian content is same reason why we get so much British: Cape Colony was under British rule .

Also Canadian broadcasting is much cheaper than Brit.

I have heard (on  US educational tv) from a guy that purchases  series from UK that  to buy BBC productions is very expensive. They have buttered their own sugar jar by  making you pay almost the same for a shitty 60s series like Thunderbirds as you would pay for the latest (shitty) Downton Abbey.

That is why, on US educational channels, the only old brit comedy series that the US buys is stuff that is most American and least provincial. Americans like stupid filthy INNUENDO so ARE YOU BEING SERVED? is a MAJOR draw amongst American audiences.Or just plain light-stupid: LAST OF SUMMER WINE. Other shows that were a great success in US are Doc Martin,Downton,As Time Goes By (unwatchable in my estimation), and that one with Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth.
Excellent UK comedies the likes of  Reginald Perrin , New Statesman, Boosh and Butterflies are completely unknown.

Haven't seen IT Crowd there though, mind.
