Okay. Im into third episode.
Dont know about good, but its not as interesting as people claim.

Its like a rubber tire fire - real slow and prolonged.

Woody Barrelson (wotever) plays the straight investigator, Marty. His partner,Russel, is played by Matthew McConnaughey and its a much more interesting character since this guy is moody/downer as all fuck and philosophizing about how the human race is the shits and should gladly go to extinction, that Woody keeps telling him to shut the fuckup cos folk hereabout dont care to hear talk like this.

Their case is a seemingly occult/ritual connected murder - naked woman found in farmfield with antlers put to her head.

Takes place in Louisiana - a mythical America of half-ghosttown farm towns and shitshacks with car parts , sofas anorl strewn across the front "yards".

The intro is clearly made by the same team wot made the intro to that other Lousiana-location (I beleive) HBO show, "True Blood". The graphics are the self-same formula. Even the theme music has that same oldtyme-religion,mystic-backwoods-Americana-yet-contemporary-countryrock vibe going through it.

Moody is the word.

Like I said, 3rd episode of 8, and its already beginning to drag something serious.

As always, the trouble is never the acting. Its the plot. Not engaging enough.

If I want to see that pagan-related murder-type stuff, Midsommer Murders does it much better.

So then this investigation goes on in 1995 and someone is arrested.

But some years later, similar shit is starting up again.

Now the two investigators this time are black and they haul in the two investigators from '95 and want to know - especially, how Russell handled it (cos this moody guy is considered the smarter of the two).

Now this is where it bogs down. You have the '95 story being told as these two black detectives are questioning the previous two.
So this, I believe, is mere padding - totally superfluous.

And, for some unexplained reason the two blacks ,seem to have all the investigation time in the world - unlike the origional two,who were hounded for conclusion all the way . They give the impression of being more interested in these two former investigators than in the actual case. They are attentative like dogs to every word that comes out of Marty & Russell's mouth. Interested in Russ's philosophizing against religion. Every word also about their PERSONAL lives - which you'd think have nothing to do with the case. And this quirk isnt explained either. Its all just, as I say, a film-tactic to fill time in this long , vacant (or feeling it so) series.

...
Example of the dark dialogue:

Russ to one of the black detectives:
"Do you got children?"
(Yes.)
"Think of the act of hubris it must take to yank a soul out of existence into this thresher."

The Russell character gets all the good lines:

"..each one so sure of their realness, purpose, individual uniqueness. So sure they are not a biological puppet...when the truth wills out and everyone sees once all the strings fall and are down."

Three or four critical parts in this series and they mess it up with the words being muffled, etc.

Example:

at the very end, the moody one - Russell - gets stabbed in the stomach and finally comes out of a coma.
Apparently - by the very last sentence in the series - he has gone thru some LIFE-CHANGING near-death experience /epiphany.
He talks about everything being dark but his essence moving to this other "warmer" patch of Darkness where he clearly senses the LOVE of his daughter, his father, directing him.

He says its just one old Story, Light vs Dark.
Looking up at the stars in the night sky, Marty replies something to the effect of :
"It appears to me the Dark has a lot more territory."

To which Russell responds, in his lazy, dragging, muffled voice:
"You're looking at it wrong . Once there was only Dark.....

And this is where the words become unintelligible (not due to the plot, but to bad recording).

I replayed it many times and SOUNDS LIKE he says: "...AND YOU ASK ANY LIGHTS IN IT?"
