WAKE IN FEAR (Australia, 1970 )

Post by Wallace on Sun Jun 07, 2015 3:25 am

"A lost weekend of self-discovery"

Totally unknown in America, this is one of three best-made Australian films.
Donald Pleasance and main character played by one Gary Bond (who looks like a cross between Peter O'toole & Richard Chamberlain)

Schoolteacher in remote, stark, waterless - no blues or greens in the film - Aussie outback "town" of Tiboonda falls into spiral of demoralization when he goes to the miningtown capitol of the area ,Yabboo-summat.(The actual town, Broken Hill, had a suicide rate amongst women that is 5 X the average, and town had 3 men to each woman - and NO brothels. The film has hundreds of men but you only see three or so women.)

The worth of this film is that amongst all the simpletons of the town you sense some sinister thing linking their over-friendliness, that, at any minute, everything could crack apart and they turn savage on the teacher. Maybe I should not give this away and spoil it for you - they never really do. The teacher turns barbaric ON HIMSELF. That is what makes this film so different and unpredictable - certainly for 1970.

Throughout the film the teacher is bein co-erced in a friendly way towards drinking. Beer & booze is the normal in this outback.
When the teacher first meets Pleasance, the bad influence, Pleasance says "all the little devils are as proud as Hell" . The teacher, as yet unpolluted by this life says, "the aggressive hospitality, the arrogance of stupid people that insist on you being as stupid as they are." Pleasance replies, "Its death to farm here, its worse than death in the mines. Do you want them to sing opera as well?"

Engy, the animal lover, best stay away from the night scene where the teacher and his new "mates" go hunting kangeroos, stunning them with a floodlight and slaughtering them, maiming them then forcing them to fight. Its an ugly scene. During the filming ,this was done in real life by professional hunters.

Does it come on auto , or do you have to work up a lather and do the old gyno-doctor fantasy in your head?

If its the mindtrip - how long a fantasy does it usually take before your hard and up?

It is a compulsion and you must give in to it.

You must "strike, like THUNDERBALL!"

Just wake up and it's there.

I knew a guy in high school who claimed he did a handstand to take a piss once. This way Big Ed was pointing in the right direction.
