THE ORPHANAGE (Spain, 2007)

Finally something I very much recommend.

This should be a future horror classic.

A sophisticated haunted house film which is more moving than horror.

Of course, absolutely no gore and special effects limited to things like  house exterior/interior and changing the sky to something more forboding.
Although a ghost story , no effects used on actual ghosts (as much as I can make out). (Certainly nothing outlandish.)

Subtle and has the audience thinking/working out the puzzle.

A del Toro film. His other wonderful films were Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone (both fantasies which DID rely on special effects) and the less-impressive, Hellboy.

Spanish actors I dont know, but I did recognize the  face of the actress playing the medium, but could not put a name to the face. This is because I thought her Spanish as well (because of the usual  thin features of Spanish women's faces). So I was surprized to read in the credits that this was a "guest" star - Geraldine Chaplin, daughter of  Charlie Chaplin.
