THE RESURRECTED (us, '91)

Starts off uninteresting but becomes a fairly decent jab at Lovecraftian horror - in this case , his story "The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward".

Doubtless for small budget reasons they made this a CONTEMPORARY take of the Lovecraft story. Bad mistake.

And they bring in  two  main details that have nothing to do with the story - seems Ward has a wife who is worried about his behaviour and calls in a PRIVATE DETECTIVE to check out what he is up to in the isolated farmhouse. The detective angle is totally unnecessary/is padding  and takes up far too much of the film.

But once they get into the catacombs beneath the farmhouse, things pep-up.  For a '91 film, the  work done on creating the look of the catacombs and the resurrected dead vilenesses is rather impressive.

Along with Re-Animator and that old Dean Stockwell Dunwitch Horror flick, this is one of the better Lovecraft-theme films.
