THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1932, US?)

Post by Wallace on Sun Mar 23, 2014 12:42 pm

wOW!   i Wouldnt expect something this old to be any good. And that plain title doesnt add to the  attraction either.

Still, it turns out this gothic-looking film has rather much to compliment it. (FUCK, WHY IS IT PRINTING IN BOLD NOW?)

For one, its directed by James Whale ,as was Frankenstein,Bride & Invisible Man. And its Karloff's first role. As in Frankenstein, its not a speaking role, so its very strange that his name gets top positioning in the cast credits, beating out Charles Laughton & Melvyn Douglas!

A trio of "youngsters" are lost on a side road in Wales and a violent storm and hill-collapse forces them into an unwelcoming manor house inhabited by five eccentrics.

The film has both comedic & rather disturbing elements. One of the eccentrics is the actor in drag!

I would not have normally picked out this movie - and never saw it before. (My sister brought it to me yesterday). Oh well, maybe I DID see it as a kid in the late 60s at the cinema. If I had , Im sure I would have left extremely disappointed as there are no monsters, vampires , taxmen.

Good  film from the long-gone days!
Nice dank ,gothic look. You can almost smell the salt-peter.
