PHENOMENA ('84)

Shot entirely in Switzerland and in German tongue, this is, after "Suspiria", my favorite Dario Argento thriller. Following "Tenebre" , Phenomena is darker.
At this point the group Goblin had broken up for a while and Dario could not get them to  re-team. Although much of the music is by Simonetti & Pinetti, Dario controversially brought in heavy metal music (Motorhead,Iron Maiden &andy Sex Gang) & Bill Wyman! I guess the heavy metal was just getting popular then and he wanted to feed into the fad on some of the brutal scenes. Even today he deems it was right for the film, but I heartily disagree.

The plot is rather an interesting one . Again, we have a girl's school (boarding this time, and shot entirely in Richard Wagner's mansion!). Jennifer Connelly is put there against her wishes by her wealthy parents. It turns out she loves insects and feels some kind of bond to them. Co-incidence of coincidences, Donald Pleasence plays a prominent entymologist (insect specialist) living nearby the posh boarding school. She becomes friends with him and learns from his book "communicating with insects" that it is normal for insects to be slightly telepathic. The professor is delighted to be able to observe her powers to command insects and jokingly compares her to beezelbub, only her as the LADY Of Flies, not LORD.
Now, all this time there is someone going about the beautiful  Swiss landscape murdering young women.
The professor suggests she uses her powers to find the serial killer. He has a sarcofphagus fly whose purpose is to find rotting human flesh and impregnate eggs there so the grubs can eat it. She is to follow the fly to find rotting human flesh and hence, likely the killer's abode. So she takes a bus and rides all about the country side with this fly in a glass box. When the fly becomes agitated she knows flesh is near. (What this has to do with telepathic powers is beyond me.)
The fly gets upset. She asks the bus driver to stop in the remote countryside and let her off. She releases the fly and FOLLOWS it to a chateau where the creature that is doing the murders lives.
Then begins a bizarre Perils Of Pauline type series of events ,which I wont spoil by telling you them.

Yes, rather unique plot.

His best role is in non-horror: Barchester Chronicles, where he plays a humble man of religion. His daughter was in that series also.

And ,not to forget, Polanski's "Cul-de-Sac"!
