Which Valve do you guys prefer the sound of an EL34 or a 6CA7 as apposed to a KT88

Have always preferred a 6CA7 it has something an EL34 seems to lack just that bit of extra oomph. Plus they look good, bigger bottle and all.

As for KT88's they just do not do it for me. They are expensive with fragile glass and although the do make more power and the detail is a bit better than a 6CA7, I do not think they are worth the bother all things being considered.

Please discuss.

Karns had a firetruck-red Eric Andersson amp for a while there wif KT88 tubes.  Back then he swore it was the bees knees, now he is talking against valves.

Yesterday, like I said, I played a Lito Nebbia lp. The reason Knobs played it was -of course the great music - but also its  a rough copy* and now that I finally got me phono working noice (thanks to Tippo!), I wanted to see if it is true that ,unlike tubes, solid state electronics exacerbate vinyl surface noise. (Becoz tubes decode surface diff from ss.)

I was pleasantly surprized towards the affirmative.

*One of my earliest record-trading contacts was Brazilian and I got some real excellent S.American lps from him, but its hard to get 70s stuff from there that is in acceptable shape.

EL34s (like 6V6GT,6550 and 6L6GC) fit in larger , 8-pin sockets. Not like  9-pin EL84's.

Wot's a 6CA7?

6CA7 american version of the EL34.  Very nice valve the big bottle EH 6CA7's are a very good buy nice sound.

Find EL84 amps nice but they can be a little weak kneed.
Do not like Amps with lots of power valves.
Need a lot of valves in an EL84 amp to get some wellie out of the amp.

EL34 and KT77  and 6CA7 are direct replacements.

The others you mentioned Knobs. Some EL34 amps will not accept them got to find out first.
Some can handle all up to even KT120's.  There is a new one out the KT150 which has the same plate dissipation as the EL34, or so I am lead to believe.

it is not your amps fault Bozo.
Valve amps got to be matched with the right speakers for best results.
What is the impedance curve like on your speakers?  Are they difficult to drive?
What is their sensitivity?
Got to take all this into account when choosing speakers for an amp.
To many guys do not get this right then they blame the amp or the speakers.
Synergy synergy Mofo that is the secrete to good sound.

Agree with you on tone controls would rather have them than not have them they are useful.
Can make crap recordings more pleasant and at least you got the option.
